As beautiful as our worship spaces can be on Sunday morning, they take on a different feel in evening's fading light, on the Winter Solstice, Good Friday, or outside on a crisp Easter morning before sunrise. Here are words and orders of service that I have written and curated for such occasions.
Service of Remembering and Farewell
In December of 2016, the church buildings and land of the UUCBV were sold to the State of Texas. On January 8 2017, we left those buildings for the last time. This service was a service of remembering, farewell, and also rededication. This was a moving service for all who attended, which included several members who had moved away. Service of Lessons and Carols
In 2016, I created a service of lessons and carols that we celebrated two days before Christmas. You can find the complete order of worship by clicking this link.
Wednesday Evening Vesper Service:
While serving as sabbatical minister at the Harvard Unitarian Universalist Church, I offered a series of vespers services. These services were organized so people could come and go as they were able with prelude and postlude music, and timed so that attendees could go off to committee meetings shortly after. I selected hymns that I could lead a capella and that were repetitive. Click here to see the liturgy.
Easter Sunrise Service:
In my mind, one of the most sacred times is right before sunrise. From 2008-2013, I led or co-led Easter Sunrise Services at either my home church or my internship congregation. These services are held outside, and while usually frigid and short, are always beautiful. I include the order of service from the service I led at my internship congregation in 2013. Please note that as my internship congregation (First Parish in Lincoln, MA) is a church dually affiliated with the Unitarian Universalist Association and the United Church of Christ, this service is more Christian in its language than I use.
